Parts per million is the unit because the amount of silver is the whole point. Colloidal nanosilver suspends particles of pure silver in ultra-pure water, which is what makes a low concentration possible to hold steady, and a steady low dose is what the testing showed was needed.
Aurora Silver Skin Spray came out of a university research programme begun in 2011, and was the first research outcome from that university to reach the market. On direct exposure, pathogens were killed within a minute at concentrations below 4 ppm. That is the reason the spray is formulated at 4 to 10 ppm rather than higher: the strength was set by what the testing showed was needed, not by what the bottle could carry.
The antibacterial work was run against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Silver acts on thiol groups, proteins and DNA, interfering with replication, which is why resistance is far harder to build against than it is against a single-target antibiotic.
The same work found the solution germicidal without being harmful to skin, and stable in ultra-pure water over years. Alongside the antibacterial results it was found to support skin integrity.
